Mental Health First Aid for Older Adults

What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA): Someone you know could be experiencing a mental illness or crisis. YOU can help them. MHFA is an interactive 8-hour course that presents an overview of mental illness and disorders in the United States. It give you the knowledge and skills needed to provide initial help to someone who may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness in crisis.

This course covers mental health concerns in all adults (18+) but has additional information specifically relating to people over 60 years of age. MHFA is sponsored by the National Council on Behavioral Health.

When: Monday, February 38:00 am – 4:30 pm. This is an 8-hour training with a break for lunch.

Where: Auburn Grace Community Church, 3126 Olympic way, Auburn, CA 95603

Cost: $25/person (Bring a sack lunch. Light snacks provided)

What you will learn:

  • Risk Factors and warning signs of mental health challenges in adults
  • To understand the impact and common treatments of mental health challenges
  • The skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate resources
  • How to support an older individual who is developing signs and symptoms of mental illness
  • A 5-step action plan and how to apply it

Who should attend:

This course is appropriate for anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn how to provide initial help to someone who may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness in crisis. This course will be especially helpful for people who interact with older adults. 

Instructor:

This training will be taught by Denise Kavenik, a certified  MHFA instructor. Denise is  passionate about equipping members of the community with the skills to support those affected by mental illness.
